POLLENÇA TOWN

Pollença

Espacio Bitácora. 7 minutes from the village of Pollença

Pollença, a tramuntana municipality par excellence, is the northernmost municipality in Mallorca. It is made up of the town of Pollença and the population centres of Port de Pollença, Cala Sant Vicenç and Formentor.

An emblematic place

Pollença's rich history dates back to Roman times. The old town preserves its historic charm with typical Mallorcan cobbled streets. Embraced by the mountains of the Sierra de Tramuntana, the scenery is simply breathtaking. The Natural Park of the Formentor Peninsula is a natural treasure offering unspoilt beaches, breathtaking cliffs and lush forests. The Formentor lighthouse, located at the tip of the peninsula, is a landmark offering spectacular panoramic views.

an essential visit

Centenary tradition

El Calvario not only offers unbeatable views of Pollença, but is also one of its most emblematic places thanks to the impressive staircase on which it stands. Made up of 365 steps, one for each day of the year, it is flanked both by cypress trees and by 14 three-metre high crosses, which recall the Calvary which, according to Christian tradition, Jesus Christ suffered on his way to Mount Golgotha where he was crucified.

Port de Pollença

Today Port de Pollença is a centre of great tourist activity with a high level of services.

The main square of the Port, surrounded by pine trees, is dedicated to the musician and composer Miquel Capllonch y Rotger. An element worth contemplating is the wind rose that centres the paving of the square.

Around the square is the parish church, a neo-Gothic style temple dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen. If we take Ecónomo Torres street from the square, we reach Enginyer Roca square. A little further on are the port facilities, located on what is known as the fishermen’s quay or old quay. Next to the traditional fishing boats, “llaüts”, you will find the fishermen’s market.
